Okay, so with the 2012 finally here, I’ve been seeing a lot of posts on facebook, twitter, etc, about whether or not the world is going to end this december. Here’s my take on the matter:

The idea that the world is going to end december 21, 2012 is based on the fact that that’s when the Mayan calendar ends, right? I still don’t see why that’s such a big deal. Rather than the world ending, isn’t it more likely that the Mayans just got tired of making their damn calendar? Think about it: How many years in advance do you make your calendars? Most people do a month or two max at a time. Mayans were doing like hundreds of years in advance. I think it’s much more likely that they just got tired of making the calendar, and december 2012 just happened to be when they stopped.

The calendar was bound to stop sometime. The Mayan civilization died out in about the 9th century AD. Without their civilization, how could the calendar have kept going? So, even if they hadn’t gotten tired of making the calendar when they got to 2012, they would have stopped eventually anyways.

I think everyone is just getting too worked up over nothing. Think about Y2K and all that: big hype, then nothing. It’s going to be the same with December 21, 2012. And if it’s not? Well, there’s not really anything anyone can do about it, so there’s really no point in worrying over it. Enjoy your life and don’t focus on things you can’t change. So either way, it’s really rather pointless to worry about this whole issue.
